The Voice Season 19 - Battle Rounds Part 1 Recap

Now that the blind Auditions are done it’s time for the battles. Each Team of 10 artists will pair up for duets. However this season, each has their own state.

The coaches have their advisors as usual. Miguel with John, Kane Brown with Blake, Leon Bridges with Kelly, and Julia Michaels with Gwen.

Each coach has one steal and one saved. The four saved artists will compete in the four way knockout round for America’s votes and a spot in the Live Playoffs

Time for the first battle

Team Blake - Worth the Wait vs Taryn Papa - Little White Church by Little Big Town

Worth the Wait is the trio consisting of their mom and two daughters. They blew the coaches away with their amazing harmonies in the blinds. Taryn is a singer from Nashville who sang at Ol Red’s and has a big country powerhouse voice. I love the song choice for this battle. This is gonna be tough to call because Taryn has a big voice and Worth the Wait’s Harmonies are incredible. If I had to pick a favorite I’d have to go with Worth the Wait.

It starts with Taryn singing lead. She’s doing really good. Worth the wait comes in with their harmonies during the chorus. The blend is great. Worth the wait takes the second verse. This is a great battle! I hope whoever loses gets stolen because they’re all amazing.

John compared the performance to a tennis match. Gwen loved Taryn’s personality and her big voice, and loves Worth the Wait’s story. She says she’d pick worth the wait. John said Taryn really held her own, and said Worth the Wait was great, but would pick Taryn. Kelly loves Taryn’s range and loves Worth the Wait’s harmony. She also picks worth the wait. And Blake picks Worth the Wait!!!! Yay!!!! Aww they’re crying after getting chosen. Ohhh Blake uses his one save on Taryn!!!! Idk if I would’ve used it this early. I might’ve saved my save and hoped someone would’ve used a steal. I’m glad she gets another shot though.

Team Legend - Tamara Jade vs Olivia Reyes - Hard Place by H.E.R

Tamara was the first blind audition we saw. She sang Lizzo and wowed the coaches with her soulful voice. She was a four chair turn. Olivia is the young girl with Dominican and Puerto Rican descent. Her best friend is the daughter of season two winner Jermaine Paul. They’re both real good, but I think Tamara has got this. Olivia is young and has potential, but she’s not ready yet.

They actually blend really well together. Love

The harmonies. Olivia is actually doing better than I thought she would. This is another great battle. John will probably pick Tamara though.

Gwen loves the tone in her voice,

And says Tamara has a punk side of her voice. What??? Anyway Gwen says she’d pick Tamara. Kelly says Olivia reminds her of Jesse J and loved Tamara’s tone. Blake loves Tamara’s charisma and he would pick her. John picks Tamara. Called it!!! Much  more seasoned than Olivia. Olivia is Eliminated. No surprise there

Aww Kelly did something to her eye so she has to wear an eye patch. She actually wears it well.

Team Kelly - Eli Zamora vs Madeline Conseur - Nobody Wants to be Lonely by Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera

Eli did his audition in Spanish and was a one chair turn,  while Madeline is the young singer from Wisconsin and has a really think accent. They’re both real good but I’m more of a Madeline fan. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

I actually like Eli better than I did in his audition. He’s got a great voice. I’m loving Madeline’s tone on the song. They’re harmonizing really well together. With all I’ve seen so far this is gonna be a tough season. I don’t even know who I’d pick. They were both great. It could go either way.

Blake says Madeline’s voice drew him, and told Eli he sang every note perfectly. Blake says he’d pick Madeline. John loved Eli’s tone but felt more urgency in Madeline’s voice. Gwen loves Eli’s tone. Kelly picks Madeline! Awesome! It could’ve gone either way but Madeline has a better chance at going further. Eli is Eliminated.

Team Gwen - Lauren Friehauf vs Payge Turner - If the World was Ending by Julia Michaels.

Lauren is the small town rocker from Colorado. Payge has a unique soulful voice. Love both

Of them but I think Payge has the edge because Gwen likes uniqueness. This song really suits Payge’s style. Lauren is doing good on the harmonies. Lauren is really making the song her own too. I still prefer Payge though.

Kelly says there’s something special about Payge’s tone, and says Lauren’s tone is magical; but she’d pick Payge. Blake calls Lauren unique and tells Lauge he wishes she were in his team. John loves the character in Payge’s tone. Gwen calls Lauren fascinating and tells Payge we haven’t seen the tip of the iceberg vocally. Gwen picks Payge! Definitely the right decision. Payge could win. John and Blake both push their steal buttons for Lauren. Lauren joins Team Legend!

Team Blake - Payton Lamar vs Jus John - Dancing with a Stranger by Sam Smith and Normani

Payton has a smooth Soulful jazzy voice. She’s married and records in a home studio her husband helped her build. Jus John is an R&B singer. Both were one chair turns. These two aren’t my favorite in the competition. I don’t expect either to win.

This is a fun battle. They’re both doing good. Jus John isn’t the strongest singer in the competition. He’s doing pretty good though. I love Payton’s voice on this though.

John loves Payton’s range and thinks Jus John sounds like Usher. Gwen again talks about Payton’s range. Kelly thinks Jus John was nervous but loves his tone. Blake chooses Jud John. Whaaaaat???? That was a horrible decision. Payton was miles better. Payton is eliminated

Team Legend - Bailey Rae vs Sid Kingsley - Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton

Sid is the bluesy singer who impressed with a Bob Dylan song. Bailey is the only country singer on Team legend. Both are great. I prefer Sid and I think John will probably pick him over a country girl.

I looooove Bailey’s old school country vibe, and Sid’s soulful growl. This is a great song for them and they’re doing amazing. Whoever isn’t picked should get stolen. Gwen loved Sid’s range, and said Bailey’s tone was great. Kelly thought the performance favored Sid more. Blake calls Bailey’s voice refreshing but said she had pitch issues, and said Sid took the battle. John picks Bailey. Wow! That was a shock. I never expected him to pick a country singer over a soul singer. Kelly used her steal on Sid!!!! Yay!!! So happy for Sid

Well that’s it for tonight. For the most part all the right people went through, except Jus John over Payton. What was that?
